State Profile

Michigan is one of this country's most beautiful states ... with hundreds of miles of Great Lakes shoreline, hundreds of smaller lakes, and thousand of acres of deep, rich forests. Many of our fellow citizens are active hunters and fishermen, dedicated conservationists who know the value of unspoiled natural areas and are willing to work hard to protect them.

Michigan's outdoor treasures are numerous: Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pictured Rocks national lakeshores, Isle Royale National Park, Manistee, Hiawatha, and Huron national forests, and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Under the astute leadership of Governor William Milliken (a Republican and REP member), Michigan moved to the front ranks of stewardship leaders. Other Michigan conservation heroes include the late President Gerald R. Ford, and former Congressmen Vern Ehlers and Joe Schwarz.

Working together, we can conserve Michigan's outstanding natural heritage for the pleasure and benefit of future generations.
