REP Unveils Its First Congressional Scorecard

We have an important “first” to brag about this quarter. On Tuesday, April 5, REP President Martha Marks and Government Affairs Director David Jenkins unveiled our 2005 Congressional Scorecard at a press conference in the Science Committee chamber of the Rayburn House Office Building. This innovative Republicans-only scorecard was spotlighted in a headline in The Hill (a newspaper that focuses on Congress), picked up by Environment News Service, and reported in newspapers around the country.

Earlier in the day, Martha and Dave had presented a “Best in the Senate” award to Rhode Island Senator Lincoln Chafee in his Senate office. Later, at the press conference, they presented REP’s “Best in Congress” award to New York Congressman Sherwood Boehlert, who unfortunately is retiring at the end of this year.

Other REP members who attended the press conference were Director Robin Tyner and Alaska Coordinator Joe Geldhof.

Now that the challenges of figuring out how to produce a scorecard are behind us—and Dave worked hard with Policy Director Jim DiPeso to come up with a creative, appropriate approach for REP—we intend to release one every year. Over time, it will give us a clear way to track the progress or “slippage” of any individual Member of Congress, as well as the entire Republican caucus. We believe that this will prove to be an important new tool as we pursue our mission of restoring the GOP’s great conservation tradition.
