The Organ Mountains in southern New Mexico are a haven for hiking, climbing, hunting, and camping.

Organ Mountains a High Priority for Wilderness Protection

The Organ Mountains are a breathtaking range of rugged pinnacles and deep canyons near Las Cruces. Designating the Organ Mountains as wilderness is a high-profile conservation issue. In the 111th Congress, legislation to designate 260,000 acres as wilderness and to establish a 150,000-acre national conservation area got as far as winning approval by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
