State Profile
New York has a
long history of conservation leadership. The Adirondacks, which is
still America's largest protected area east of the Mississippi River,
was established by Republican leaders. Protection of the Adirondacks as
"forever wild" was enshrined in the state Constitution in 1894.
Since
then,
great New Yorkers such as Theodore Roosevelt worked over the decades to
establish a first-rate system of state parks and forests. Most
recently, under Governor George Pataki's leadership, 1995-2007, New
York continued its tradition of leadership in protecting air, water,
open space, and wildlife habitat. We're proud to count New
Yorker Theodore Roosevelt IV, the great-grandson of President
Roosevelt, as a Lifetime Member of REP.
New
York has plenty to see in the great outdoors. Besides the incomparable
Adirondacks, visitors can enjoy the Catskills, Finger Lakes, the Hudson River, Lake
Ontario, and Lake Champlain. Even in the vicinity of America's biggest
city, wild lands and wildlife can be enjoyed at Fire Island National
Seashore, Gateway National Reecreation Area, the Hudson River Valley
National Heritage Area, and Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge.
Working together, we can conserve New York's great natural heritage for the pleasure and benefit of future generations.
