A Three-prong Plan for Governors Island

by Mike Boyajian, a REP member in Fishkill, New York
published in the City section of The New York Times on October 8, 2006

The city is having trouble developing plans for Governors Island (“Another Pass on Governors Island,” editorial, Oct. 1). A simple idea for the island would be a three-prong mixed recreational plan.

First, the historic buildings would be preserved as part of an educational historic restoration. Second, construction of a small resort hotel on part of the island would help pay for maintenance of the restoration while subsidizing ferry service to and from the island.

Finally, a portion of the island should revert to its original wooded state, allowing visitors to experience New York Harbor back in time before the arrival of European settlers. This wooded park would also include an area for outdoor camping. Imagine an inner-city child sitting before a campfire as the sun sets in the west beyond the Manhattan skyline.

This is an affordable pay-as-you-go plan that would benefit all New Yorkers.
