Supporters of plans to build additional coal-burning power plants seem to assume they are necessary to support our state's continued economic growth. By implication, those who oppose the fast-track process would impede development, resulting in job losses and a diminished tax base. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Surveys routinely indicate that quality-of-life factors such as a healthy environment, good schools and quality mass transportation systems are critically important in corporate relocation decisions.
Texas is home to some of the world's most advanced technology. Our businesses and universities boast some of the finest minds in science and engineering. Why not marshal these resources to help create a comprehensive energy plan for Texas that considers all possible solutions?
We owe it to ourselves and future generations to meet our energy needs in ways that do not foul our air or contribute to global warming. It is possible to have clean air and economic growth; Texans should demand nothing less.
