Letter on Global Warming

by Chester Sansbury, REP Director Emeritus
published in the (Columbia, SC) Free Times, edition of February 21-27, 2007

I could not give Michael Graham’s recent ramblings about global warming a chuckle and a pass (The Usual Suspects, “Warming Up to Global Reality,” Feb. 7). He evidently doesn’t understand something as simple as the difference between weather and climate or he’s just engaging in some psychological mind game.

Scientific facts mean little to political ideologues whose minds are locked up in a narrow-minded view of the world. The fact is that the global climate is indeed warming and scientists are surer than ever that atmospheric carbon dioxide buildup due to human activity is a major cause.

Our federal government and our own state are doing very little to confront the cost of a warming world to our society. Many other states and local governments are taking aggressive action to require more efficient energy use and stimulate the use of alternative energy sources. Even the CEOs of many Fortune 500 companies have joined the battle to encourage our government to confront the problem more aggressively.

Also, more and more Republicans like me are working hard to encourage action at all levels to tackle the problem of human-caused global climate change. Hopefully, Michael Graham will stop putting the spin on people and talk accurately about scientific facts on the issue of global climate change.
