There You Go Again, Rush

May 5, 2010

As Ronald Reagan used to say, "There you go again."

On his entertainment program April 29, Rush Limbaugh insinuated that environmentalists blew up the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in order to kill an energy bill that might expand offshore drilling and give a boost to nuclear energy.

Limbaugh offered his turgid conspiracy hypothesis without a shred of evidence to support it, but evidence has never been Rush’s strong suit.

Aside from the obvious question as to why environmentalists would risk endangering fisheries, shorebirds, wetlands, and marine creatures with a metastasizing oil slick, there is the small matter of how such a breathtaking feat of sabotage in mile-deep water would be accomplished.

Limbaugh outdid himself days later when he said the ocean will see to cleaning up the slick "if it was left alone and left out there." After all, "it’s natural. It's as natural as the ocean water is."

Don’t tell us, Rush. Go down to the Gulf Coast and say that to the faces of crabbers, shrimpers, and oystermen fearing for their livelihoods.

Chances are, the fishermen would have a more astringent response to El Rushbo than "there you go again."
