Who
started the national forest system in the early years of the 20th
Century? Gifford Pinchot, who later went on to serve twice
as Pennsylvania's governor.
Which
former Pennsylvania Congressman was honored by several conservation
organizations for his work protecting the Delaware River ... and was
also one of REP's "environmental heroes" in the House of
Representatives? Republican Jim Greenwood of Bucks County,
whom we're still proud to count as a member of REP 's Honorary Board.
Which
Republican members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly sponsored
anti-sprawl legislation?
Former State Senator and now Congressman Jim Gerlach, and former State
Representative Dave Steil... both REP members.
Which
member of the Pennsylvania Senate is both a REP member and an advocate
of environmentally-responsible energy efficiency? Chuck
McIlhinney.
What natural treasures can you
see in Pennsylvania?
Plenty, including the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, the
John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge (named after the late John Heinz, a
Republican U.S. senator and great conservationist), and the Allegheny
National Forest, inside of which visitors can enjoy the Allegheny
Islands and Hickory Creek wilderness areas. Designated wilderness areas
are authorized by the Wilderness Act of 1964, which was inspired by the
vision of Howard Zahniser, a conservationist who grew up in the
Allegheny River watershed of northwestern Pennsylvania.
Other
special Pennsylvania lands and waters include Gettysburg National
Military Park, the Susquehanna River, state forests and state parks.
Working together, we can protect Pennsylvania's treasured natural heritage for the pleasure and benefit of future generations.STATE
