State Coordinator Chester Sansbury,

Senator John McCain, along with
a group of other South Carolina
conservationists to discuss energy
and climate change.

"There are many good
Republicans in South Carolina
who oppose some of
President Bush's domestic
initiatives. We urge Sen.-elect
DeMint to consider these issues
very carefully as they arise,
in light of their impact on
South Carolina, and not just
be a rubber-stamp for legislative
action because the president
supports it. I will mention just
two areas of major concern.

President Bush's environmental
policies over the last four years
have consistently promoted
the narrow interests of
political leaders in the Western
states, and their logging and
mining industries, over a more
balanced approach to
environmental stewardship that
is desperately needed in
South Carolina and other
over-developed Eastern states.
The recent attempt of the
administration to change the
Roadless Area Conservation
rules in our National Forests is
a prime example."

John Wagner published in the

South Carolina REP actively involved in presidential campaign

Throughout 2007, Chester Sansbury, our state coordinator in South Carolina, worked to promote REP's positions on natural resources conservation and environmental protection. He discussed energy and climate change with Senator John McCain—whom REP ultimately endorsed— and asked a question about climate change of Governor Mitt Romney.

In his role as an advocate for REP in South Carolina, Chester sent the following letter to State Senator Catherine Creips:

Congratulations on your election to the SC Senate. It was a pleasure meeting and talking with you at the Republican State Convention in May. I was encouraged by your interest in and enthusiasm concerning environmental protection issues and your interest in the organization well known as “Republicans for Environmental Protection (REP)”.

Republican politicians, especially on the national level, have acquired a poor reputation in the last 10-20 years concerning support for strong environmental protection values that the vast majority of our citizens share. Voting records of our Congressmen are not reflective of the grassroots feeling of our citizens. For example, Congressman Joe Wilson has one of the lowest rankings in the nation on support of positive pro-environment legislation. Fortunately, we have several Republicans in the SC General Assembly who reflect the will of our citizens when it comes to enacting and supporting strong State legislation to ensure we protect and sustain our environment and quality of life. I hope you will be one of those who will support the strong environmental values of our citizens.

REP’s main focus is to support Republican politicians who realize and value the importance of a healthy planet, educate others who have demonstrated a lack of respect for the need for a healthy planet, and to educate and motivate Republican voters to get more involved in protecting our planet. We have been working hard at this for over ten years and believe we are making a difference.

I was encouraged during our conversation by your keen interest in REP and hope you will become a member. With your permission, I will be happy if you would allow me to arrange for your initial annual membership. Simply fill in the enclosed membership form and return it to me and I will take care of it. It would also be great if we could count on your support and your encouragement to others to support our organization by joining or contributing to our efforts.

Please let me know if I may ever be of help to you concerning environmental policy issues. It would be a pleasure to be of assistance to you.

South Carolina hosted REP's annual conference

In 2001, REP members in South Carolina were pleased to host REP's sixth annual conference at Springmaid Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach. Dozens of members from around the country joined us for a day-long meeting on Saturday. Many of them took advantage of a tour of Sandy Island Nature Preserve that was arranged for us by Dana Beach of the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League.

Here are several photos taken that day during our Sunday outing to Sandy Island.
